Wishing the nosey people who follow this blog a most productive and rewarding 2012. Last year was a pretty hectic twelve months for me - busy with work and a few other projects that I should be able to show fairly soon. A lousy twenty odd posts for a whole year is rather weak to say the least. My thanks to you guys for sticking with me. :)

I'm not big on new year resolutions - why designate a specific time to make changes in your life - but I do plan to ease off on sticking my fingers in other peoples pies this year, and concentrate on my own projects and painting interests. That should equate to much more regular posts. I also want to pick up the pencil again and get back to a healthy sketching routine. We shall see.

Thanks, again, for your interest and encouragement. Here's to 2012! *sip*

I'm getting a little more confident at doing speedpaints of ships by suggesting, rather than overtly depicting. It's the best one can do without some pretty solid understanding of the workings of sails and rigging, wind and wave: An amalgamation of photo references thrown together with a slight nod towards the general colour palette from the film, Master and Commander. Done for a friend.

I recently suffered a rather painful sensation in my ankle (make of that what you will) which has forced me to lie low for a while and put my feet up. Or at least one of them. I can't subscribe any degree of rational thought to the idea of clouds having a silver lining, but the sudden case of immobility has forced me to redescover my old graphite friend, which in turn hilighted just how slovenly my scribbles have become; hence this page of sketchbook sloppery (?)...

Must try to fix this problem.

I've been busy running my Nintendo DS into the ground by doing a number of plein air speedpaints around my local area. It's a lot of fun and a good excuse to get out of the house and explore my surroundings more thoroughly. Granted, the screen glare can be a bit of a problem sometimes, but I can usually find a shady spot to compensate.

As the title would suggest, this is the first batch and more will follow. It's a little late for New Year resolutions, but I thought it would be cool to try and regularly paint on location throughout the year so as to enjoy the changing seasons.

I thought the original Bilgewater idea deserved more attention - if only because it is the first paint I've done (so far) where the title came before the image. As it turned out, this speedpaint opened up a lot of thematic ideas I wish to return to at some point soon.

I've been running my system on half memory, after one of my mem ram "thingies" bought the dust. it is almost impossible for me to paint using Corel Painter (my personal fav') so this was done in PS... including a little lag towards the end. It's a fairly quick (under 2 hours) experiment in trying to render steel armour in a dirty-scribble way. I also experimented (failed?) with an odd balance within the frame: All that light crammend into the left side together with the unconventional figure direction. It soooo leans towards the left when the right side offers much more room. Haha... it's fun to try things out, though.
